What we do and how we work
Amigos de Sian Ka'an is one of the leading NGOs in Mexico dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development. We were founded in 1986 in order to fulfill the civil society´s need to make operational the newly established Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Over the years, the organization has expanded its work to the entire state of Quintana Roo, in the Eastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean.
Amigos de Sian Ka'an is a proactive organization that does not resort to confrontation in order to reach its goal. Istead it promotes solutions that balance the development of society and the preservation of natural resources through sustainable practices.
The work of Amigos de Sian Ka'an is based on the best available scientific information to thereby promote public policies such as the decree of protected areas, or to design standards, environmental ordinances and urban development plans. Based on these policies, we work with communities, businesses, authorities and students in order to increase the participation of society in nature conservation. All this is done through productive projects, the design of good environmental practices and environmental education.
The Amigos de Sian Ka'an team Works, with the help of society, to preserve the largest jungles in Mexico, the largest underground rivers in the world, the most important wetlands in Mesoamerica and the second longest coral reef in the planet. These natural treasures have enabled the development of Cancun and the Riviera Maya as the most important tourist destinations in Latin America. They also perform important environmental services including freshwater capture the beuty of its lanscapes, the capture of CO2, which causes climate change, coastal protection against hurricanes and many more.
Amigos de Sian Ka'an is a non-profit organization and depends on your donations to care for, protect and preserve the Mexican Caribbean.
