The conservation of more than 2.4 million acres of forests, wetlands and marine environments that have been protected; the federal and state governments decreed 13 protected areas in the Yucatan Peninsula that were proposed by Amigos de Sian Ka´an.
The Quintana Roo government, at the urging of Amigos de Sian Ka´an, recently declared three new protected areas: Cozumel, Chichankanab and Bacalar – more than 74,000 acres. In 2012, we launched the ¨Planning, Design and Sustainable Construction in the Mexican Caribbean Guide¨ in partnership with the State´s Secretariat of Tourism.
For 27 years we have collaborated with 37 Mayan communities and fishermen in the generation of sustainable products and services to support the local economy, including the establishment of collective trademarks such as: Ak Kuxtal wood art, Pitahí jam and Mayak’an a marketing company.
Amigos de Sian Ka’an has the largest repository of knowledge of the Quintana Roo aquifer. Using cutting edge technology, we have created unique maps of the largest underground river system.
