PROGRAMS

To achieve our mission, Amigos' staff of 25 works on over 20 projects from our offices located in Cancun, Carrillo Puerto, and Chetumal. The projects fall within the following Programs

1.- Community Based Natural Resource Management: Engage with local Mayan communities to preserve their culture and natural resources, promote their sustainable use, and provide social and economic benefits for current and future generations

2.- Conservation of Birds in the Yucatan Peninsula: Promote a culture of bird appreciation and conservation throughout the region, provide alternative economic revenues through habitat preservation, and define research strategies for the conservation of over 500 bird species of which a third are migratory and 15 are unique to the Peninsula;

3.- Integrated Coastal Resource Management: Develop coastal management models and policies based on research information and implement low impact practices on tourism and fisheries, incorporating every social sector involved

4.- Characterisation, Conservation, and Monitoring of Coral Reefs: Conduct studies in order to protect and monitor the health of 400 miles of the Mexican portion of the Meso American Reef, the second largest reef system in the world;

5.- Environmental Policy: Design and promote policy tools such as decrees for the establishment of protected areas, management programs, and environmental zoning programs for conservation and proper use of natural resources

6.- Private Land Conservation: Preserve unique sites for their biodiversity and strategic location through acquisition or the establishment of easements on private and communal lands;

7.- Wildlife Management: Develop sustainable use practices among resource users as a means to generate revenue through the harvest of species such as lobster, parrots and crocodiles, contributing to the maintenance of the existing reefs, forests and wetlands;

8.- Support for the Management, Operation, and Consolidation of the system of Parks and Reserves of the state of Quintana Roo: Assist managers in the administration of funds for an array of activities including the prevention and control of forest fires, ecosystem restoration, research, and monitoring to ensure adequate policies for ecotourism, fisheries, coastal development and resource use.
